“I love knowing I’m making a difference every day.”
Taurean and his Southland-born wife
The couple decided they’d return to Southland from London – not only for a change of scene, but because it was important, to them, their children grow up in the same place as their whakapapa. The family have never looked back.
The kura kaupapa and hapori in Invercargill has not only enriched his family's connection with the place, the community culture – that permeates the smelter – has made settling in to work easy also.
“Being a newbie here is great.
There are guys who’ve been here 30-40 odd years and they really make you feel included. It’s like a big family. I love coming into work and seeing the diversity of people. It’s a wonderful place to be. It really is.”
“It’s great knowing how despite being such a small community, we make such a big impact on the world.”

About 90% of the aluminium produced is exported every year.
“Seeing our innovations and product being used all around the world to actually improve technology is quite amazing. It’s really special to be a part of Tiwai’s contribution to Southland.”
