CHRIS KIRKWOOD
HSE SERVICES: ENVIRONMENTAL MAINTAINER TECHNICIAN
“We can see the impact we’re having on the environment is getting less.”
Chris has been working at Tiwai for 32 years
Over the last three decades, he’s actually seen the environment get better.
“We’re not putting as much fluoride into the air as we used to, and the water that we discharge is getting cleaner.”
Chris loves knowing that what he does, at work, each day makes a tangible difference to the Southland environment. His job of monitoring the impact the smelter has on the peninsula is incredibly important to him, and the community as a whole.
As a Southlander who grew up north of the peninsula
Chris has always loved the outdoors and definitely has a connection to the area.
“I’ve been here for 32 years, my son’s worked here, and now I’ve got a grandson that I’d like to have the opportunity to work here. It’s important we look after this place the best we can.”
“I’m outside a lot, so I want to see the environment the same or better by the time I leave.”

IANZ-accredited laboratory
As an IANZ-accredited laboratory, the collection process is rigorously monitored and achieving the ISO 200 standards is simply a part of the aluminium production process at Tiwai.
The Health, Safety & Environment services team ensures the smelter maintains high sustainability standards, so that Southland and the smelter will continue to be in pristine condition for the community and generations to come.
