“Really sharp minds, doing really smart things, at the bottom of the world.”
Andrew is an employee of more than 30 years
Andrew still finds Tiwai an incredibly interesting place to work. He says the diversity of equipment and innovative processes on site is incredible.
“At one end of the plant is 600 megawatts of power. At the other is the ship unloader, which has a vacuum strong enough to suck a car up. The equipment is both miniature and massive"
Some equipment he services literally requires climbing into.
The people at NZAS have to innovate
Innovation runs deep – due to their own one-off processes and equipment and the plants’ remote location.
Situated off the coast of Antarctica, they’ve never had access to local supplies in the way other smelters do, but it’s the isolation that’s established the plants’ innovative and experimental philosophy.
“We all have ideas that might look a bit weird on paper. But when you start going through them they’re brilliant. The culture at Tiwai is to push.”
“We make the purest aluminium in the world.”
At 99.98% – Tiwai’s purity of product is attributed to the use of highest quality alumina and a renewable power source.
"NZAS aluminium is used in nearly every industry, from automotive to aerospace. In fact, our aluminium is orbiting earth right now.”
